What a great story Ms Grant and two of our Prep mums uncovered, with our DEM Library’s Remembrance Wall for 11 November: At Caloundra City Private School, Pelican Waters, a Wall of Remembrance has been created, commemorating relatives of students and staff, who died or who served their country in wars. Prep students, Liam Fowler and Jack Hendey contributed photos and information about their great grandfathers. It was discovered that during World War II, Liam’s great grandfather, Walter (Herbert) Fowler was living in New Zealand at the time he joined the NZ Armoured Brigade. On the other side of the world, Jack’s great grandfather, John (Jack) Cecil Hendey was living in London when he joined the Honourable Artillery Company. Liam and Jack (and their mums) were amazed to find that their great grandfathers fought in the same battle at Cassino, Italy in 1944! Liam and Jack’s families are astounded at the coincidence and feel sure that Lance Bombardier Jack Cecil Hendey and 2nd Lieutenant Herbert Fowler would be very surprised and proud to know that their great grandsons found each other in the same Prep class thousands of kilometres away, 72 years later. Pictured is Jack (left) and Liam standing beside the photos of their great grandfathers who once again are side by side…on the Remembrance Wall.
