Westpac Bicentennial Foundation Scholarships Last week I had the privilege of attending a breakfast in Brisbane with Westpac, our School’s bank. Jon Nicholson, Chair of the Westpac Foundation, addressed the audience of educationalists and socio-community professionals. He spoke briefly of Westpac’s history in Australia, founded by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1817 in Sydney as Bank of New South Wales. The bank was reportedly established with a view to fostering free enterprise and entrepreneurship in the new colony and to progress it beyond its harsh penal colony beginnings. Westpac’s bicentennial in 2017 will be complemented by the establishment of a highly significant $100 million scholarship fund that will operate annually in perpetuity. This is made possible due to this extensive sum of money made available by the bank to support young Australians’ development in leading, innovating and pioneering the country into the future.
