Year 7 Geography Students Take on Urban Planning
Our Year 7 Geography students recently swapped the classroom for the real world in an exciting collaboration with UniSC and Sunshine Coast Council.
During their visit to the University of the Sunshine Coast, students were introduced to the main concepts of town planning by Sunshine Coast Council Town Planner Jason Krueger and UniSC Senior Lecturer in Urban Design and Town Planning, Dr. Nick Stevens. These experts shared real-world insights into how communities are designed to balance competing needs.
After learning about key considerations in urban planning, students were challenged to put their knowledge into action with UniSC’s Serious Urban Play game. This interactive experience tasked them with designing cities while navigating the complexities of societal happiness, community needs, economic viability, environmental sustainability, and mobility.
The game allows students to visualise, understand, and experience urban planning firsthand.
This hands-on learning experience highlighted the importance of innovative thinking in creating sustainable and thriving communities. A big thank you to UniSC and Sunshine Coast Council for providing such an impactful and engaging day for our students!
