Year 7 Maths – Applying Algebra
Ever stopped to think about the mathematical intricacies hidden within everyday tasks? From the mundane to the monumental, algebra often lurks behind the scenes, helping us make sense of the world around us. Year 7 Maths students are diving deep into this fascinating realm during their classes.
In the video, we take a closer look at something as seemingly simple as mowing a lawn. Beyond the whirring blades and the scent of freshly cut grass, lies a world of calculations waiting to be explored. Deputy Principal Nathan Reynolds chats with Matt, our school Maintenance Officer, to unravel the algebraic secrets of lawn mowing. Together, they’ll delve into the various scenarios where algebra comes into play, from calculating the area of the lawn to determining the optimal mowing conditions for efficiency.
Our Year 7 Maths students have been tasked with identifying and exploring similar scenarios, shedding light on the practical applications of algebra in everyday life.
Stay tuned for further videos and updates as our students share their findings and formulas.
As March approaches, so does the NAPLAN assessment for Year 7 students, bringing with it a wave of anticipation and, at times, heightened anxiety. In the midst of this, Mr. Brimblecombe, our dedicated Year 7 Mathematics teacher, takes an active role in coaching and practice sessions to prepare students for the upcoming challenge.
Understanding the significance of these assessments, CCPS recognises that engaging in regular practice not only contributes to knowledge acquisition but also plays a crucial role in fostering mental resilience and perseverance – qualities collectively known as self-efficacy.
Today marked the commencement of practice sessions for Year 7 students. Utilising our learning management system Canvas, we are able to facilitate multiple attempts – practice tests, providing an avenue for the cultivation of perseverance. The process of building perseverance involves allowing individuals to make repeated attempts, serving as a measure of character based on their persistent efforts. Through this, we not only gauge and measure perseverance but also witness the strength of one’s determination and resilience. It was heartening to witness certain students go above and beyond, showcasing exceptional determination to excel in their preparations. They persisted in their attempts, pushing themselves until they reached their personal bests.
This commendable display of perseverance is more than just a preparation for a test; it exemplifies the development of a personal brand characterised by resilience. It’s about teaching students to face challenges head-on, armed with the resilience needed to overcome obstacles. Each attempt becomes a stepping stone towards a stronger, more resilient version of themselves. The NAPLAN assessment becomes not just a test of academic knowledge but a testament to the personal growth and determination fostered under the guidance of a dedicated teacher. These students are not merely navigating mathematical challenges; they are sculpting the foundation of their character, ready to soar beyond the confines of a classroom.
