Rich schools are those that are not financially wealthy, they are wealthy in human endeavor and positivity. This week we’ve been involved in Teacher Appraisal using the seven Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) with the seven Standards or criteria for evaluating Teachers nationally. These seven Standards are: Teachers know the students and how they learn; Teachers know their subject content and how to teach that content to students; Teachers plan for and implement effective teaching and learning; Teachers create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments; Teachers assess, provide feedback and report on students’ learning; Teachers engage in professional learning; Teachers are engaged professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community. In their Appraisal our Teachers survey their students for their feedback and evaluation of them; Teachers self-reflect and consider their areas of strength and aspects they want to learn more about; and their Head of Subschool and the Principal provide further detailed observations of their practice. In my experience our Teachers greatly value the opinions of their students, and I think that’s because that’s why they are Teachers, to help young people to learn. I think few Teachers ever stop learning in their profession and it is a vibrant place to be. I find it very satisfying to work with Teachers about their teaching, because of their willingness to keep developing.
