The one certainty of living in The Sunshine State, is that when it does rain it pours; and Cyclone Debbie decimated many places. With the Queensland Government ruling that schools should close for the safety of parents and children on the final two days of Term 1, communications on that Thursday became very difficult. It seems that all schools’ SMS messaging systems had traffic jams; and in our case, we know that some parents did not receive the advice twice sent out, and also on our Facebook page, that school was closed for Thursday, and then Friday. In the end, CCPS was fortunate not to suffer damage, and I’m not aware of any injury in our community from the horrendous cyclone. However, part of the mopping up includes the postponements from farewells, assemblies, meetings, and celebrations to end the Term. It was strangely difficult from a Staff perspective to not have many events such as the Easter Hat Parade; the drawing of the Parents’ and Friends’ Easter Raffle for the Permaculture Garden; farewells to the children in our classes, and farewells to Teachers including Mrs Staff going on Maternity Leave, and Mrs Wearmouth who has been on Maternity Leave concluding her time in the Senior School; important staff meetings that had to be postponed; and School Captain, Kaitlin De Wildt, and Ben McNamara (Yr 11) had arranged for their hair to be ‘shaved’ for ‘Shave for a Cure’ fundraising.
