A ‘new beginning’ sounds so exciting doesn’t it? There’s a clean slate and a world of possibilities and opportunities. For some of us though making a new beginning can be daunting and difficult.

This week I was contacted by a lovely woman, a parent of the school, who had recently left another country to make her new home in Australia on the Sunshine Coast. She came to see me last year and during our talk the parent told me how she and the children had struggled to cope with the cultural change but most of all, she missed her previous life and the family and friends left behind. The sense of loss was palpable and she found, that her grief for what she had left, affected her deeply. She struggled to make new friends because she found it so difficult to face the new day. After long a long discussion, the woman agreed to try a few different strategies and to see her doctor. After telling her story of woe to her doctor, the doctor asked, “What do you fear?”
